There are more than half a million back-ordered Helium Hotspots waiting to come online.

Instead of expanding product usability, Amazon expanded its data collection abilities. The user data market is robust, and likely why Amazon and Google are substantially cheaper than the privacy-focused Apple. In the case of Sidewalk, there is little incentive to enhance the security of consumer data. Amazon recognizes this consumer ignorance, evident by their silent overnight June 8th rollout of Sidewalk to every compatible device they offer. Another nail in the benefit-of-the-doubt coffin, users must individually opt-out. If Sidewalk is an amazing service, then consumers would happily opt-in to it. The evidence suggests that in the case of Sidewalk, Amazon has much to gain while consumers gain little other than an increased risk to their privacy.
No risks I am aware of. 868 MHz is widely used and not far off what the terrestrial TV uses to broadcast its signal. It is long-range low power so doesn’t really penetrate much.
Enter the Helium hotspot. For over a year, individuals have been able to buy and deploy one of the bologna-sandwich-sized hotspots, which both acts as a node in the network (via low-bandwidth wireless tech called LongFi) and rewards the owner by mining HNT crypto tokens.
Since (almost) no one uses the network, the fastest way to earn HNT is to witness other screamin’ beacons. That means if you set up a hotspot in a coverage desert where, theoretically, it’s providing a ton of valuable additional capacity to the network, it is barely rewarded at all because it has no one to witness. In the future, if the network becomes popular, these nodes will make money from providing the valuable utility of data transfer, but for today, there’s no incentive plant new flags in far-flung places unless you can bring a bunch of friends along with you.
You need a better location. I’m averaging 1-2 per day after halving. Don’t give up!
Cryptocurrency is real and it will be adopted by the mainstream public some year as it matures to become easy, safer, and useful. But for now, it is being used by conmen to attract greedy people no differently than the snake-oil salesmen of the early settling pioneers of America.
Internet of Things devices have been around since the 1980s. The fad came and went in the 2000s.
In the four months since my last update, we had a crypto crash and my HNT earnings dipped considerably going from up to 10HNT per day down to around 1HNT with a bad day being 0.5HNT. This was expected, the halving happened in August and there has been a massive influx of hotspots. Between that and the issues with getting Hotspots (ie Nebra being useless), I had lost a bit of faith in Helium and crypto in general.
First comes Austin, and should all go well, Helium is planning to deploy its hotspots to 56 cities all over the world by October.

Data Transfer Rewards are issued at a 1:1 ratio to HNT expenditure, and are capped at 30% (in Year 1) of all minted HNT. The remainder is granted to the Proof of Coverage Rewards Pool as a bonus for providing early coverage.
If you missed the HNT marketing pump back in April/May, you’re just another shitcoin bagholder.
